I can now confirm that the Sigmatek Disk Reader (http://pvr101.blogspot.com/) works with this unit. Disk Reader mounted the drive (after I'd put it in a USB enclosure), and Videolan handled the resulting files even though they don't seem to have extensions.

UPDATE

After a couple of teething problems with the box freezing up when fast forwarding I sapped the 40Gb drive out for 250Gb - and this cured the problem. The 40Gb must be on its way out.

Another interesting issue has raised its head - the thing puts out a massive EM field. I have to turn it off before I can use the FM radio on the shelf above it, and I think it interferes with the ring signal on my DECT phone (also on the shelf above it). Doesn't effect TV signal or the wireless network, so I guess I can live with that.

Trillian is great at traversing corporate firewalls which Live messenger isn't that great as you are unable to specify proxy settings which are not linked to the settings in Internet Explorer.
